This was written for the book ‘Against the Clock’. Against the Clock is a collection of stories and poems, on behalf of The Alzheimer’s Society - the contents of the book were written in at 12-hour writing marathon and from that marathon a collection of poems and stories have been put into a book and dedicated to all those lost to, or suffering from, Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia.
My Grandfather died of Alzheimer’s so this is rather close to home.
On a more personal note, although I was writing this for Against the Clock it had to come from within; this is pretty much how I felt at one point… and I do have a box in my cupboard with special bits and pieces from the past!
Forget all I want to Remember
There in my cupboard
lies a box,
a box with too many memories
for me to memorise.
So I kept a box to simply
remember all I’d forget,
but sometimes,
just sometimes, I wish that
box would disappear, so I could
forget my mistakes,
forget the past and all I never
did, all I wanted but
was too scared to seize,
to hold onto tightly, through
anything.
There, in my box lie
the secrets of my past,
the love I was sent
and the love I threw away.
So just sometimes,
when it’s a black day
I wish I could forget
all I wanted to remember.

That poem was breathtaking. The only thing that I can think of saying is, “You write Beautifully.”
