They twist and turn,
vicious and lovely,
they play,
and then they die;
but just as you breathe
air into them
at long last, they live;
red and orange,
sometimes yellow,
burning away;
fierce and strong,
don’t touch
you’ll burn.
They entrance me,
their warmth calls me,
breaking away the poorly stitched heart,
burning the thin thread,
pulling at the edges,
tearing at my heart,

What Once Was Mine

He stands with me,
near me, so near me…
mere feet away,
with the grace of
normality…
His body language,
warm and charming,
exuberant and welcoming.
His crew cut,
always the same,
never long enough to play with,
to dive into.
His deep white smile,
forever warm and cheeky,
unchanged.
His deep, soft voice
a familiar tune,
effortlessly outdoing
any voice, any sound in the room.

hard and strong,
soft and gentle,

Our Sweet Summer

The memories flash;
sweet and young
were you and I
reckless and carefree,
cringing moments,
perfect then,
uncomfortable now,
and yet
they remain sweet
and young,
tempting and desirable
often wanting what was then;
innocent, sweet love,
sweet, caring friendship,
sweet heartbreak only I know of.
Sweet and young,
older and wiser,
curler, harder…
I’m found wanting,
waiting, needing
our sweet and simple
summer of love.
